Start with the first So many good stories Just awesome Now to light them all on fire and send them out to sea I m sure the library won t mind Brian Wood This is by far the biggest scope for the series We take the Hauksson clan and their years through ruling Iceland It s actually pretty amazing how this chapter jumps from generation to generation of characters We start with a child s point of view of coming to the land and end up with not even a full blooded Hauksson but instead a wife of a Hauksson bloodline It just goes to show you how much could actually change through the generation and really pushes the feels of you are not your family vibes Good Loved the start Super strong.

Finds that the violent behaviour and aggressive attitude that worked in the 9th century has a completely different effect in the 13th now that Iceland has developed from a few scattered colonies into sophisticated towns The episodic structure of the narrative works really well as we see society advancing through the ages technologically and culturally but Wood is careful to make the focus of each story action and character development The attention on character and story has been the approach Wood s taken in each of the books in this series which is why they ve been such excellent reads Rather than feeling too far out of the modern reader s experiences.

Finally like a true viking I put up my shield wall and fought my way all the way through this terribly written series The whole time I was wondering if I d made some sort of mistake if in fact I would die in this battle And I did I died These books killed me and now I m writing this from Valhalla I died with a sword in my hand to be clear. Northlanders, vol. 7 pdf download Woof this was a poor as expected dismount After 6 straight volumes of Viking nonsense and zero commitment to any level of consistency of story or tone Wood finishes off with a muddled rushed generational story of a Viking crime family living in Iceland I say that in quotes because the only way I knew they were a crime family was because the back of the book told me so There is essentially no indication of what exactly this family does in the entire book We know they re named the Haukssons they hate the rival Belgarssons they have land and they are frustratingly petulant and violent at all times As for crime well we see them do no crime We hear them talk about land grabs and how much they hate both the Belgarssons and the newly arrived Christians but we never actually see why There s one small offense by the Belgarssons at the beginning of the book and then a perfectly decent man turns into a child abusing monster for no discernible reason setting off the family s absurd rise. Northlanders, Vol. 7shifts log Not for one moment in this book did I care about a single character None of them act like human beings instead just doing whatever s necessary for the plot to move forward no matter how stupid or irrational I saw no reason that anyone would ve followed the Haukssons Their power is never actually displayed we re just supposed to trust that all of a sudden they re powerful. Book northlanders, vol. 7 book Additionally the generational mechanic Wood decided to use here gives the story no time to breathe There are three generations shown here each about 200 years apart and each story only lasting 3 issues This means there s barely any time to establish stakes character motivations status quo It s just a bunch of people fighting all the time as if conflict in and of itself is enough to fuel a story. Book northlanders, vol. 7 book It s fair to say I hated Northlanders I read the entire thing only because each volume tells a brand new story and I thought at least one of them would be great But it isn t It s sloppy with its writing and often sloppy with its art There s nothing to care about It s all just macho mascu lit perfect for anyone who just wants to watch some dudes grunt and stab people If you re interested in genuine Viking stories as I was this is not going to deliver anything satisfying Brian Wood Okay so Wood is going for the typical Viking saga this time around I applaud him for the effort ad I ll judge him as mostly succcessful He traces one family the first to settle on Iceland down through 11 generations and 400 years from the dawn of their power to their fall Throughout these generations we see many characters who personify the evolution of a ruling class in three geographic areas Iceland Europe and the Anglo Saxon regions I am sad that this series has come to an end and will miss these emo petulant and violent warriors This last book details a family s rise and fall through several generations in Iceland beginning in AD 871 and ending in AD 1260 Three artists are utilized Paul Azaceta Declan Shalvey and Danijel Zezelj as we move through the different eras. Northlanders, Vol. 7orbetter We begin with Norwegian immigrant Val Hauker whom with his wife and son Ulf settle on the empty shores of Iceland Within a year other immigrants begin to move there too but Val wishes to establish dominance as he was there first After a violent run in with the Belgarsson clan Val wishes to teach Ulf a lesson on how to be strong against future attacks but he goes too far and turns Ulf into a sociopath Time passes and Ulf grows up and he consolidates power so his family can reap the riches of the region He frees an Irish slave and takes her as his wife and their bloodthirsty ways grow However I do not understand how Ulf becomes so powerful why would other settlers align with his small family in the beginning While this establishes the beginning of the Hauksson dynasty I did not buy it. Book Northlanders, Vol. 7 walkthrough Skipping ahead to AD 999 we meet the fifth generation of the Hauksson s brother and sister Brida and Mar There is a Game of Thrones vibe here including a sexually charged relationship between the siblings When Mar leaves to loot among the southern coast the Belgarsson clan aligns with the growing group of Christians in the area putting the Haukssons at risk Brida needs backup so she finds the illegitimate son of her father hoping her half brother Ott can help strengthen her position When a converted Mar returns the twins fight over how Christianity is changing traditional Icelandic ways but Mar argues that they must join with them if they want to stay dominant At the height of their family s power this is a turning point for them and the siblings need to adjust accordingly. Northlanders, Vol. 7ob The final jump is to tenth generation heir Godar and his impetuous son Oskar in AD 1260 Godar is a steady man who is documenting his family s linage and has the riches of his family in stable holdings now that the family no longer has to go to war to retain their power However Oskar wishes for glory and makes a power play so he and his allies can fight soldiers from Norway who are encroaching on Iceland But things don t go as planned and after several failed military maneuvers Oskar loses the confidence of those he leads The Hauksson family is now in decline 400 years after settlement but the family name lives on I am a huge fan of much of Brian Wood s work especially Briggs Land and Rebels and this sometimes uneven series further cemented him as one of my favorite authors Some stories were obviously stronger than others but the problem I had was the inconsistent artwork Illustrators like Leandro Fernandez Becky Cloonan and Ryan Kelly were excellent others were horrible Dave McCraig the colorist throughout the series did the best with what he was given and kept to an earth tone palette which brought some consistency to the varying art styles I loved every single work of cover art by Massimo Carnevale and wish he had illustrated some if not all of the stories Wood shines with his historical fiction series and you can tell he does his research although he often will put in modern sensibilities into his work His interpretation of Viking history is one you don t want to miss Brian Wood The idiotically named Iceland Trilogy is actually ten parts long It is the end of the excellent Nortlanders series It may stupid name aside be one of the best stories written yet Starting in the mid 900 s AD it tells the story of the Hauksons Fleeing from Norway they settle in Iceland and start a multi generational saga that goes on until the mid 1200 s AD Perhaps the only part of this that could be considered a trilogy is the fact that the first act shows the foundation of the family the second act shows their rise to dominance and the final act their demise In fact it spans eleven generations This is a dark and gritty tale Unlike many of the Northlanders series this one is decently drawn though throughout the entirety of the series I have never seen good art save the covers I have truly enjoyed the Nortlanders run and Mr Wood seemed to hit full stride with this last story arc I shall be sad to see it go as there is really nothing like this in comics that I have yet found If you enjoy historically based Viking stories then this is a great series to sit down and get to know Brian Wood

Kindle northlanders, vol. 7 full book This is a fitting end to a great series After 4 strong volumes and 2 that were good but not great that s volumes 5 6 folks Brian Wood gives us what is arguably the best collection of the series Okay a case could be made that Northlanders Vol 4 The Plague Widow is a strong contender for best but I think the scope of The Icelandic Trilogy puts it head shoulders above it The middle story was my favourite where the sister is doing her best to keep things going in spite of the Christian Invasion of Iceland and does so mercilessly The one person she was counting on to have her back was her brother but he does the unthinkable at least to her and converts to Christianism The world she knew was changing and there was really nothing she could do about it. Historical Fiction Northlanders, Vol. 7e pdf I m glad the writer kept The Icelandic Trilogy for last go out with a bang always leave them wanting that sort of thing If let s say either or both volumes 5 6 would ve been released after this book I might ve thought the series had run out of steam and that it was time for it to end or something along those lines As it is Northlanders collectively is one of the strongest 50 issue runs of any series I ve ever read and I recommend this series to anyone with an interest in history and good storytelling willing to try something off the beaten path of capes spandex Brian Wood This gets 5 stars partly for the story itself which follows the Hauksson family from it s arrival on Iceland in 871 with father Val Hauker through to 1260 with the 11th Generation Oskar Hauksson and partly for the non stop high quality of everything to do with this series. Book northlanders, vol. 7 summary Do yourself a favour and pick up Northlanders It s so good you can honestly pick up any single volume but for maximum enjoyment intriguing sad and intense I also loved every generation having a different feel and story despite all the main characters feeling like ONE huge family The twist and turns and the somber ending all flow really well to give generational jumps meaning Bad The last story kind of lacks the punch the first two did A main character here isn t nearly as interesting as the two before him Overall a fantastic ending to a pretty solid series Sure there s some stories I could live without reading again but some I ll never forget Violent dark sad happy these stories jump through various emotions and themes and I gotta say Brian Wood did something special A 4 out of 5 for this one Brian Wood The year is 871 AD and Val Hauker arrives on the shores of Iceland with his wife and son escaping the monarchic tyranny of Norway Iceland is uninhabited and barren a naturally beautiful but harsh environment to begin a new life and a dynasty His son Ulf will begin the ruling family the Haukssons and the book tells their brutal and violent reign in Iceland over 4 centuries from their auspicious beginnings to their rise in power and their eventual downfall The final book in the brilliant Northlanders series saga is a fantastic Viking version of the Godfather The rise and fall of the Haukssons is really exciting reading from the vicious child beating that opens this story up we see Ulf become the battle hungry Viking brutally laying the bloody foundations for his family to become a major power in the fledgling land Jumping forward to 999 AD we see Ulf s descendants Mar and Brida Hauksson brother and sister and how they ve developed the family s land and held on to power Mar leaves Iceland to pillage the coastal towns of England leaving Brida to maintain the family s position If you like strong female characters you ll love Brida Beautiful but intelligent with an iron will and physically the match of any man she proves to be a formidable figure in the Hauksson clan but she faces the most imposing challenge of her life when Christianity comes to Iceland and and of the Icelandic people abandon the Old Gods and begin to convert Including her brother The book jumps for a final time to 1260 AD where Oskar Hauksson channelling his ancestor Ulf s violent nature and lust for battle Wood s Viking characters have relatable personalities and goals successful careers family protection challenging tradition love and death and the pursuit of happiness at all costs that has made reading the Northlanders series feel contemporary in spirit While applying 21st century sensibilities to characters living hundreds of years in the past might seem contrived there really isn t a way into the mind of a Viking to make them seem authentic that doesn t feel false But by writing them like human beings today faced with the challenges they faced back then it s really brought the story to life in a way that seems as real as it can be for what it is the universal and timeless story of the human experience I think the book length stories in Northlanders have been the best like Sven the Returned and The Plague Widow so I was glad to see the series ending with a feature length story rather than a collection of shorts but I wasn t glad to see the series ending at all Like each book in the series it can be read as a standalone piece despite the Volume next to the title but I highly recommend all 7 books in the series each one is utterly brilliant And sadly that s it for Northlanders Cancelled before its time It really was an excellent series and I could ve read a new book each year forever it s just a shame there weren t enough readers out there who felt the same way The good news is Brian Wood is the new writer on Conan the Barbarian which is basically Northlanders with a main character and feels like a very natural transition for him so I ll be picking those up to sate my appetite for stories featuring medieval lunatics with swords But these 7 books remain and what books they are I urge anyone who s yet to discover this series to pick up one of these books and take a trip to the frozen lands of the north to meet the bloodiest craziest and most realistic Vikings caught on paper by a modern comics master Brian Wood.
