The Power of Trees By Charles Katz
The Power of Trees kindle reader
Her bogus materialistic worldview makes this book a bit tiresome to read as it contradicts the spirituality she is seeking to purvey in support of the survival and dignity of trees How readers appreciate this book will depend on a lot of factors Those who have no interest in evolution will find a great deal in the book worthy of intense criticism given the author s frequent speculation on the subject Those who paid for this book will likely find it not entirely worth their money with small amounts of dense text full of scientific jargon and elevated vocabulary and artistic black and white photos of trees along with large amounts of white space However.

interesting tidbits about how important trees are to human life and the world Charles Katz I won this book and gave it to my sister for her birthday It s a beautiful book During the long winter days the need to be outside in nature can really be felt This book is a bit of nature for those moments Charles Katz I won this book and it is truly a gift what looks like a little book with not much substance is so much The photographs are hauntingly beautiful and the text that comes with them is well written informative and emotional It will change what you think about trees or if nothing else it will cause you to think about tress which you may have never really done before Charles Katz I did really enjoy the blurbs written about trees that were throughout the book but I was not pleased at all about how irrelevant the photography was except of course that the subject was trees Sure the pictures are beautiful but if I m reading about a magnificent African tree I do not want to see a you think and how you feel about trees In poetically sparse scientific observations renowned conservation biologist Gretchen Daily narrates the evolution impact and natural wonder of trees Alongside photographs by Chuck Katz the text and images form a quiet and moving meditation on The Power of Trees Twenty six duotone black and white photographs illustrate the development of how trunks were formed what tree rings tell us about human societies and how trees define the future of humanity Pictures of trees threading through the landscape dotting mountainsides braiding along the sides of glassine rivers bear witness to the lyrical force and clarity of Daily s observations Recreating the authors hike together through the landscape of the Skagit River in Washington State the balletic movement between Daily s commentary and Katz s vision reaches out to readers inviting them to enjoy the landscape through a scientific understanding of trees At once emotional and intellectual The Power of Trees is the first collection of nature photographs that invites the reader to not only delight in the gorgeous play between light and shadow but also the fascinating natural mechanisms that create such striking natural beauty An ecologist by training Gretchen Daily is an internationally acclaimed conservancy advocate and scholar Her role as a National Trustee for The Nature Conservancy will feature prominently in the national marketing campaign to bridge the gap between scientific educators and the general nature reader The Power of TreesAt first glance this title appears to be only a diminutive art book but even giving it a quick read I gleaned some interesting tidbits I d never heard of the Pando trees in Utah or should I say tree and didn t know anything about the the greatly prized woodgrain of the Acacia Roa from Hawaii Even though I m a beekeeper I d never heard of the eyebrow hair plucking Scaptotrigona Mexicana If you re a tree lover you ll enjoy this book but if it leaves you wanting try The Man Who Planted Trees by Jim Robbins That s a title that I wish everyone would read Charles Katz Poetic and pleasant Love the specific details and how familiar and local the referred places are for me Photography could have meant to me I was looking for them to act as contextual illustrations but I think they were trying to tell their own story a narrative beyond my grasp Recommended and gifted by Catherine Martineau photographer also did one of Whitman geology professor s books perchance Charles Katz This is a great little book The name makes it sound like some kind of New Age nonsense It s not It s made of a handful of short essays on the biology and evolution of trees interspersed with beautiful austere black and white photographs of Puget Sound forests The Power of Trees is pretty great My only minor complaint is the lack of some lush colorful images to compliment the black and white Charles Katz In many ways this is a strange book an artistic look at trees that is or less equally divided between elegant black and white photos of trees along the Skagit River region in Washington state and text that purports to be scientific that discusses the power and importance of trees set in an artistic framework that includes large amounts of white space and a deliberate appeal to environmentalism by touting its use of post consumer waste to reduce the amount of trees killed to make the book which makes the book slightly less ironic than it would otherwise be without such a focus on sustainability The end result is a book that does not take long to read but is precisely the sort of book that an environmentally conscious person in the Pacific Northwest would like to have on their coffee table for others to idly flip through and give approval to as far as having good taste in books to share with others In terms of the contents of the book itself the pictures are immensely lovely While they would have been even beautiful in color as black and white photos there is a sense of old fashioned grace and strength to the pictures of fallen trees bare trees in meadows trees along the Skagit River trees with immensely complicated and beautiful root systems and so on The photos are a particular strength of this book The text itself is a bit of a mixed bag as the author manages to convey a sense of the interconnectedness of trees and the intimacy of the relationship between trees and other beings like bees birds and mammals However several times the author speculates on a chimerical arboreal ancestor that lived 80 million years ago that supposedly was dependent on sight than smell which influenced our own sensory output While the author may be praised for her erudition and her passion for trees those who receive such a book as a gift or who read it from a library or on someone s coffee table are likely to find the book an enjoyable way to spend a few minutes As is often the case much depends on perspective The book is a bit too favorable for trees especially given that it celebrates the self defense abilities of trees even in the face of pestilence that has wiped out many breeds of trees completely across wide habitats showing that despite the power of trees they are also very vulnerable a fact this author for obvious reasons does not wish to focus on 1 1 See for example Charles Katz This gorgeous book alternates black and white photos with interesting facts and information about the many benefits of trees Almost like observing a tree in winter this book encourages new ways of seeing a familiar object Like contemplating a tree this book imparts a sense of peace in the reader I think it would make a great gift for anyone interested in photography or nature. The Power of Trees epub file I like how this book is the perfect blend of art and science The photographs illuminate the form of the trees while the prose details the many functions From the Rainforest to a colony of mangroves the world relies on the contributions of trees They are essential to our existence These beautiful photos of Washington s Skagit valley accompany a lovely reminder to appreciate the poetry of the forests Charles Katz.
