Saipan Slaughter (McLeane's Rangers No 4) By J. Darby
McLeane and his four highly trained Rangers land on Saipan just before the American invasion with the objective of blowing up the Japanese headquarters They don t know they have an arch enemy a Japanese major who encountered them in an earlier novel who is determined to personally capture and torture McLeane. The book is fun The action is deliberately over the top with the combat often evolving into brutal hand to hand affairs McLeane for instance has not one but TWO knock down fistfights with that Japanese major Earlier when being transported by sub to Saipan McLeane takes over command of the sub as it duels with an enemy sub And when the Rangers end up captured an escape is made possible after a Japanese nurse falls in love or at least in lust at her first sight of McLeane But despite McLeane and his Rangers being close to supermen the author still injects a sense of danger into their actions They take wounds and suffer setbacks giving us the sense that their eventual victory is truly earned Saipan Slaughter McLeane s Rangers No 4
