This is a really excellent reference book It is not the sort of book one reads but rather consults though I did in fact read all of it it consists mostly of lists and tables of the knowledge that was fundamental to the worldview of the educated of the Middle Ages and is based largely on the scholarship and thought of C. Book Medieval literacy rate S Lewis I say the educated because I feel that medievalists sometimes forget that the esoterica of medieval thought were not necessarily available to everyone nevertheless this book illustrates well my point in a debate I used to have with a housemate and good friend He insisted we know so much now than anyone knew in the Middle Ages My contention was that educated people knew the same amount of information but they knew fundamentally different things Anyone delving into the intricacies of medieval theology of interpretations of Aristotelian philosophy would have to see my point I think James Grote This was a fun book Following in the tradition of the medievals Grote has lists for just about everything summarizing classical and Christian knowledge As he says this helps us understand the intellectual world of C. EPub Medieval literacy test S Lewis but the book has a wider purpose For those most of us who have not immersed ourselves in the classics this provides a helpful shortcut and introduction to the main concepts and intellectual imaginative architecture of Western civilization Grote also includes a sections on Islam as well as a Hinduism Buddhism His introductory essays to each section are also very helpful James Grote Caveat emptor This book contains little discussion it s basically lists along the lines of what every literate x should know doesn t provide a preview and as yet there are no reader reviews The publisher Fons Vitae does provide the book s table of contents in a sample file that can be viewed online Surprisingly many entries are Buddhist and Hindu terms The TOC shows that many list terms e.
