The history of the antiapartheid movement brings up images of boycotts and public campaigns in the UK but another story went on behind the scenes in secret This is the story of the foreign volunteers and their activities in South Africa how they acted in defiance of the apartheid government and its police on the instructions of the African National Congress ANC From the transportation of weapons to the passage of ANC fighters into South Africa this account describes the many risks taken by the volunteers many of whom were young communists Trotskyists or independent socialists who traveled from the UK Ireland the Netherlands and the United States to join the cause London Recruits The Secret War Against ApartheidAfter Nelson Mandela and most of the ANC leaders were imprisoned in South Africa it looked like the end of the organisation However Ronnie Kasrils and some of the leadership managed to escape from the country and set up base in London Here they had the ingenious idea of recruiting white people in London to go to South Africa and using small explosive devices help distribute ANC leaflets to the black masses giving the message that the ANC was still alive and well despite the setbacks it had suffered By using non South African whites very little suspicion fell on these people initially.
