Jake Logan is a pen name of a number of authors of Slocum Western series Jake Logan is a pen name of a number of authors of Slocum Western series site_link Slocum s framed but he won t be hanged Slocum s having trouble sleeping in Abilene The town s overrun with rowdy drunken cowboys but what s really got him wide awake is Mac the man who just shot open his hotel room door accusing him of stealing his wife Martha Before Slocum can reach his gun Mac s dead on the floor and the marshal is arresting Slocum for murder Although his name is cleared Slocum must flee Abilene and an angry mob bent on putting a rope around his neck When he reaches the saloon in the dying town of Gantt he discovers a bounty hunter on his trail and an angry woman with a shotgun saying he killed her husband What s worse is that her name isn t Martha and her husband wasn t Mac Now Slocum must solve two murders or someone will make sure he never sleeps again Slocum and the Meddler Slocum 399 I do not understand how this novel gets such high ratings from other reviewers It is garbage from page one onward through to the conclusion Slocum is falsely accused of murdering a man cliche plot here but hey the poor guy s widow Angelina Holman isn t so broken up about her husband s murder that she can t have plenty of good sex with Slocum Yeah I know unrealistic as hell but author Jake Logan is hardly concerned here with realism and believability And of course it is the kind of sex where nobody ever gets pregnant and nobody ever gets a sexually transmitted disease or at least Slocum is smart enough to hightail it away from Angelina before he or she has a chance to find out The plot is as twisted as Logan can make it The basic problem in this novel for Slocum is that there is an individual named Herk who seems to love to stir up trouble between others so that he can sit on the sidelines and watch other men fight it out with each other Good unrehearsed gladiatorial entertainment that At first Slocum thinks that Herk is his buddy alerting him to trouble ahead But unbeknownst to Slocum Herk is watching Slocum closely waiting for chances to frame him so that he Herk can enjoy watching Slocum fight his way out of trouble with lawmen bank robbers bounty hunters and a cutthroat out to steal Angelina s ranch Or is Herk involved in these activities than Slocum at first believes And again stretching plausibility to its outer limits Slocum can fight and win against one of the many villains in this novel even though Slocum has been stabbed and badly wounded and is recovering But the real problem with the Slocum novels is inherent to long series of novels featuring the same character there is never a clear ending happily ever after Slocum just keeps moving along to his next adventure and his next bed partner with no end in sight English .
