Book The Good Spirit of Laurel ridgecrest Three stars for the memorable character Theopolis better known as Op who is central to THE GOOD SPIRIT OF LAUREL RIDGE Within the story Op s home deep in the Appalachian hills is encroached upon by outsiders from the city who do not understand his way of life As a naturalist of sorts Op spends a good deal of time explaining the forest to these city dwellers and he also spends equal amounts of time spinning yarns about his experiences living in his home It is clear that if Op loves anything it is his home on Laurel Ridge He views it as a paradise and even his name seems to be a play on the idea of a metropolis he might not come from Dayton like the others but he lives in God s city of the forest and hills that provides for him everything he needs In the midst of the celebration of nature there is a mystery to be solved too an unknown man is killing foxes and Op suspects he is the speret of a man long dead As wonderful of a character as Op is some of the the others characters lack any development at all which is certainly true of Op s daughter The plot also stalls at different points in the repetitious feel of Op explaining Laurel Ridge time and again and in the stories he shares that aren t connected to the present moment while these aspects of the narrative do highlight Op s rootedness to place this intense character development comes at the expense of momentum If you pick up THE GOOD SPIRIT OF LAUREL RIDGE available with a Kindle Unlimited membership be prepared not so much for a story as much as for an experience of learning about a man named Op and the home he fiercely loves and defends The Good Spirit of Laurel Ridge
