Book the merchant from sepharad review Joshua s tale told in first person begins when at age eighteen he is sent from Sepharad Iberia or Spain by his father a successful merchant to start a new business in Lishbunah Lisbon Portugal He is given a stash of gold ornaments to present to his contact Essua to form the groundwork of the enterprise Arriving in the port city he gets an introduction to adversities to come because he is a Jew the customs official seizes his gold and informs him he must pay an entry fee to reclaim his goods Essua and others assure him that this treatment is standard for those of their religion. The merchant from sepharady analysis The attempt to recoup his loss is the beginning of a lengthy journey that will take Joshua ever farther from home becoming involved in what seems a justifiable killing raising the religious and philosophical quandary of vengeance He will see firsthand the evils of slavery again forcing him to question some beliefs common at the time He observes the differences that run deep between his Israelite family and those of Muslim or Ishmaelite faith and begins to comprehend the beliefs of Christians as well Joshua seems doomed to fail at commerce but he excels in scholarly pursuits Advised by a rabbi to study religion he must learn Hebrew script making a deep study of both Torah and Talmud His travels continue resulting in meeting a beautiful young woman named Hannah and further entanglement in international and inter religious intrigue With help from allies including a giant former slave named Blazh Joshua heads towards Yerushalayim the Holy Land. The merchant from sepharadz pdf Hutson Wiley pursued a career in international trade and finance that led him to many of the locales and cultures with which this book and its predecessors are infused His writing combines a rich pictorial imagination as well as diligently researched historical detail He has appended a helpful Glossary of the many foreign names needed for the story s authentic feel Into his narrative he weaves such notables as the Jewish sage Maimonides a child at the time when Joshua meets him Joshua is a fully rounded character berating himself for his failures as a merchant while modestly realizing aspirations as a student and teacher Through a wide range of perils and triumphs Hutson Wiley s hero remains faithful to family and spiritual vision. The merchant from sepharadz pdf Quill says Hutson Wiley has received awards for previous works leading to this addition to the collection for which he is certain to garner yet positive attention and praise The Merchant from Sepharad Sugar Merchant 3 The Merchant from Sepharad is the third book in James Hutson Wiley s Sugar Merchant series Joshua ben Elazar is a young man determined to prove to his father that he can both forge his own path and be successful as a merchant and make him proud Achieving his goals however will not be easy Joshua as a Jew faces religious persecution and discrimination from both Christians and Muslims Subject to extraneous taxes restrictions on where he can stay in a city and targeted by those wishing to make examples of the infidels Joshua s journey is a constant myriad of curveballs that not only threaten to derail his future but at worst his very survival The Merchant from Sepharad is my favorite installment so far in Hutson Wiley s series I found Joshua to be a relatable narrator and protagonist Just entering adulthood he is desperate to both forge his own future and chase down big dreams such as venturing to the Holy Land but also still yearns to earn the approval of his father who Joshua feels always finds a reason to be disappointed in him He tries out multiple different paths from trying to step into his father s shoes as a merchant and carrying on the family legacy to breaking from his father s commercial aspirations for him and trying his hand at being a Talmudic scholar He suffers crises of faith falls in love and sometimes like all young adults acts a little too rashly without fully thinking through his actions and the possible consequences The Merchant from Sepharad can be accessible to a wide audience The age of the protagonist allows the book to fit into the young adult category while the subject matter and supporting cast of characters also allows the book to straddle lines of historical fiction religious fiction and history Like with The Sugar Merchant and the The Travels of Ibn Thomas the author s knowledge of the time period and the historical events is extensive and quite thoroughly researched The book therefore feels like an authentic look at what it might have really been like to live as a member of the Jewish community in the years following the first crusade I did have some trouble with the pacing and flow of the plot at times while reading The Merchant from Sepharad Joshua s journey takes him to quite a few different places and finds him amidst turmoil at almost every step of the way While the author s portrayal of the discrimination faced by Jews at this period in history is mostly believable Joshua seems to find a surprising number of villains who want to kill or harm him It was not so much the constant danger but the rapid pace of the protagonist seeming to bounce from one tragedy or perilous moment to another that sometimes lessened the impact of those scenes It also made it a little difficult to figure out how fast and far time was passing as the story went on Overall The Merchant from Sepharad was a compelling and exciting addition to The Sugar Merchant series James Hutson Wiley has built a world and a cast of characters that allow for vast opportunities for new stories to tell and different sides of history I would recommend the book and the series overall to any fans of historical fiction especially those with an interest in the history of the Crusades and the areas in and surrounding the Holy Land The Merchant from Sepharad Sugar Merchant 3 The Merchant from Sepharad is a religious and spiritual novel written by James Hutson Wiley it is also the third installment of a series This book follows Joshua ben Elazar who is on a personal journey for fulfilling his life He wants to find success in the merchant business but he also wants to find love And during this quest he comes across many obstacles The majority of these obstacles include the persecution of the Jewish people and many violent conflicts rooted from the persecution Joshua takes different paths throughout his journey when he finally finds the truth of his life It seems as if no matter where Joshua went or any other character there was persecution of those of the Jewish faith They were looked down upon and looked as less It was either be completely dehumanized or compromise themselves for slightly better treatment Hutson Wiley offers a historical look to how Jewish people were treated via novelization Joshua is continually mistreated starting out with his failure of his business due to corruption I was not sure how I was going to feel about the novel as religious novels are not generally something I am interested in However I was greatly surprised by this book It is face paced and the author s writing style grips the reader into the book I had a hard time putting the book down The challenges that Joshua faces along his journey are also deep and meaningful He learns about himself helps others and is able to find a real connection to his faith It s a beautiful story that some people could relate to even if it is not the exact events I think anyone who is interested in personal journeys religious novels or even spiritual ones would enjoy this book It is not only interesting but it is well written and the characters feel like real people The Merchant from Sepharad Sugar Merchant 3
